German Chancellor Anglea Merkel joined U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for a state dinner at the White House Tuesday. There, Merkel was presented with the Medal of Freedom, the U.S. government's highest civilian award. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "Most honorees are Americans. Only a few others have received it, among them Pope John Paul II, Nelson Mandela and Helmut Kohl." Washington's who's-who of political elite dined in the White House Rose Garden on a menu including tuna tartar, petite filet, and apple strudel. (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL SAYING: "Imagining that I would one day stand in the Rose Garden of the White House and receive the Medal of Freedom from an American president, that was beyond even my wildest dreams. And, believe me, receiving this prestigious award moves me deeply." Merkel is in Washington to discuss amongst other things, global economics and the role of Germany in Libya's future.
