June 13 - A six-month-old baboon baffles experts in Kenya by adopting a three-month-old Bushbaby. Gemma Haines reports.
It's a match made in Kenya. This six-month-old baboon recently adopted a three-month-old bushbaby at an animal orphanage in Nairobi. Edward Kariuki says both animals were rescued and have since become good friends. SOUNDBITE: Edward Kariuki, Kenya Wildlife Service Nairobi Animal Orphanage warden, saying (English) "It so happens that after keeping them for quite some time, they have developed a relationship, where the baboon is now taking care of the Bushbaby. This is not normal, it has not happened here, and I guess it has not happened anywhere else." The baboon and bushbaby are inseparable, sharing meals, and playing together at the orphanage. Two different animal species, it's an unusual phenomenon, and the blossoming relationship has baffled their carers. SOUNDBITE: Edward Kariuki, Kenya Wildlife Service Nairobi Animal Orphanage warden, saying (English) "There are not many instances where we have had a Bushbaby and a yellow baboon kept together, we only happened to do this coincidentally or incidentally by the fact that both of them came around the same time. We have been feeding them at the same time, we feed them mostly on similar feeds, when they are feeding they happened to come up with the special relationship between themselves. So it's also a discovery to us as well." Differences aside, it's the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Gemma Haines, Reuters.
