Welcome to the world! A new baby koala made its first public appearance at a wildlife park in Sydney. Named 'Boonda', the infant remained close to its protective mother. Sydney Wildlife World veterinarian Sam Gilchrist, says the mother and baby koala were doing well and were forming a special bond. SOUNDBITE: Dr. Sam Gilchrist, Sydney Wildlife World Veterinarian, saying (English) "It's a really important time, the first six months of life for a koala. We really try to preserve that mother-joey bond. It's really important that that is preserved. Because Elle is a first time mum, she's proven to be a great mum, and we're really happy that that first six months is out of the way." Veterinarians will keep their distance from the mother and baby, as human interaction could be detrimental to the development of their relationship. Land clearing is the greatest threat to koalas in Australia, with an estimated 43,000 remaining in the wild. Gemma Haines, Reuters.
