Aug 20 - At least 34 Syrians are reportedly killed as the government continues a brutal crackdown against protesters. Andrew Raven reports.
This amateur video - reportedly from the Syrian city of Homs - shows soldiers firing from a rooftop. A narrator says the troops are shooting at anti-government protesters gathered on the streets below. Another video - posted to a social media website - shows a tank barreling through the city, part of a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy activists that left at least 34 people across Syria dead on Friday. It was one of the bloodiest days yet in the five-month old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. But despite the violence, thousands of Syrians continue to take the streets. At this March in Homs, protesters demanded Assad resign, calling him a "traitor." The violence triggered calls from the United States and the European Union for Assad to cede power. Leaders have also stepped up sanctions and laid out plans for a possible oil embargo. Andrew Raven, Reuters
