Aug. 31 - Videos posted on a social media website purport to show Syrian troops shooting at protesters in Deraa, as demonstrations continue across the country. Nick Rowlands reports.
Video posted on a social media website, which cannot be independently verified, purports to show scenes of chaos amongst protesters in al-Hara district in the Syrian province of Deraa on Tuesday. Activists say at least four people, including a 13-year-old boy, were shot dead by security forces in the southern province. Other video appears to show thousands of protesters marching in Homs after Eid prayers. Demonstrators in Maarat al-Numan carried olive branches as they marched through the streets. The United Nations says around 2,000 civilians have been killed during the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. Residents and activists have reported an increasing number of defections among the Syrian armed forces. They are drawn mostly from the Sunni majority, but are dominated by Alawite officers effectively under the command of Assad's younger brother Maher. Nick Rowlands, Reuters.
