Feb. 10 - Digital toys and mobile apps may be the hottest toys for the 2012 holiday season. Even iconic Barbie has a digital camera this year. Jill Bennett reports.
Make way for Mickey, he has some new dance moves this year. He's just one of the rollouts at the annual Toy Fair in New York City, which previews what may be the hot toys for the holiday season. Also in the Mattel booth: the Hot Wheels Ballistiks which bounce into a car and can be shot out of a cannon. And a whole array of tech savvy products, including this portable DVR player. Chuck Scothon is Mattel's Senior VP of Marketing for the U.S.: SOUNDBITE: CHUCK SCOTHON, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, MARKETING FOR THE U.S., MATTEL (ENGLISH) SAYING: "We are seeing a lot of technology merging with traditional play patterns that kids intuitively understand." Mattel's Apptivity Action Games allow kids to take a toy and interact with an iPad app blending physical and digital play. Even Barbie comes with a digital camera this year. Over at Hasbro technology led the charge in gaming with its new iPhone compatible Laser Tag game. The toy maker also put a new spin on an old board game. Chief Marketing Officer John Frascotti: SOUNDBITE: JOHN FRASCOTTI, CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER, HASBRO (ENGLISH) SAYING: "You have that face to face interaction and that social experience of playing around a kitchen table but you also have that immersiveness and the video of a video game on the iPad itself." Industry watchers say the toy industry has remained resilient even in tough economic times, and the Toy Fair is critical to create buzz for the holidays.
