Amateur video out of Syria which could not be independently verified by Reuters appears to show the aftermath of an attack on a market. Violence is escalating in Syria as rebels began contesting President Bashar al-Assad's control around the capital Damascus. Foreign powers are deadlocked. Western countries support the opposition but Russia, and China have blocked three U.N. Security Council resolutions condemning Assad. Assad, whose family has ruled Syria for four decades, says he is fighting off radical Islamist militants funded by the West and Gulf Arab countries. Rights groups say more than 40,000 people have died in Syria since the uprising began in March 2011.
