July 26 - Rebels say they have overrun military outposts throughout Syria and urged Russia to stop its support to President Bashar al Assad. Deborah Gembara reports.
Syrian rebels are claiming to have overrun military outposts in both the north and south this week, according to this latest video posted to a social media website whose content Reuters cannot independently verify. Inside this building in the town of Khan al-Assal is where activists say they discovered the bodies of dozens of soldiers executed by rebels. The discovery took place as opposition leaders were meeting with the UN Security Council for the first time. The 15-member body has been deadlocked on Syria. Russia, and China have blocked on three occassions efforts to take action against President Bashar al Assad. Syrian National Coalition Member Najib Ghadbian appealed directly to Russia. SOUNDBITE: Senior Syrian National Coalition Member Najib Ghadbian saying (Arabic): "We asked them (Russia) to stop providing the political and military support for this criminal regime to continue its crimes against the Syrian people." According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began over two years ago.
