Aug. 2 - Amateur videos purport to show Syrian rebels attacking government troops in Damascus while explosions rock the central prison in Aleppo. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Rebels take the fight to government forces in Damascus. The video, which can not be independently verified by Reuters comes as President Bashar al-Assad's forces have staged a counter-offensive in recent weeks, pushing rebels back from around the capital city. Earlier this week Assad said he was confident of victory. But no one is giving up the fight. The war that has already cost the lives of at least 100,000 people. More footage appears to show fire balls in the skyline over what is said to be the central prison of Aleppo. The conflict in Syria began more than two years ago with world powers so far unable to find common cause to stop the fighting.
