Sept. 7 - Japan wins over the International Olympics committee, assures officials that Tokyo is the ''safe pair of hands'' needed to host the 2020 Summer Games. Deborah Gembara reports.
Anticipation and nerves as Olympic officials in Argentina announce who will host the 2020 Summer Games. SOUNDBITE: International Olympic Committee President Jacque Rogge saying: "The International Olympic Committee has the honor of announcing that the Games of the 32nd Olympiad in 2020 are awarded to the city of Tokyo." Japan beat out Turkey and Spain for the honor --- securing the bid with a three-prong argument to the Olympic committee. SOUNDBITE: Tsunekazu Takeda, President Tokyo 2020 saying: "Delivery; because Toyko can be trusted to be the safe pairs of hands and much more. Celebration; because Toyko will host an incredible city centre party like never before. And innovation; because Toyko will offer all its creativity and technology to benefit sports world wide." Madrid --- a contender earlier in the day, failed to convince members that its economic crisis was behind while Istanbul has been the site of massive riots this year and struggles with agrowing Syrian refugee population. While this will be Japan's second time hosting the Summer Games, Tokyo's victory wasn't a given. Japanese officials still had to convince the committee that the Fukushima diaster and concerns about radiation were completely resolved.
