May. 24 - At least 20 people have been killed after mortar fire hit an election rally in support of President Bashar al-Assad in southern Syria. Sarah Toms reports.

Local TV showed the wounded and dying lying on the streets of the southern city. They had come here to support the President Bashar al-Assad at an election rally but rebels shelled a tent, that was used for election campaigning. This was the result. More than 20 people died in the mortar fire and the death toll is expected to rise as many were seriously wounded. Syrians are due to vote on 3rd June in an election, that looks certain to give President Bashar another seven year term. But the vote has been branded a sham by the West. It's just one attack of many in Syria. This amateur video appears to show a fighter jet firing rockets at buildings in the Syrian capital. Here a tank that's said to belong to rebels allegedly targeting government forces on a hill on the outskirts of Damascus....and more pictures show several barrel bomb explosives being detonated. This video was posted onto a social media website and Reuters cannot independently verify the content. But the footage highlights violence on both sides. Human Rights groups estimate that more than 160,000 people have died in Syria's three year conflict and millions more have fled their homes.
