The bright lights of New York come to life as a billboard the length of a full city block dazzles Times Square. Sharon Reich reports
Bright, bold and bursting with color ... the biggest advertising billboard in Times Square history is unveiled. SOUNDBITE: Harry Coghlan, President and General Manager of Clear Channel Outdoor saying (English): "You have to go big if you want to get noticed." Calling this big could almost be an understatement. Clear Channel Outdoor is selling the space that stretches a full city block ... which by the way is longer than the length of a football field. And as for height -- this HD billboard is 80 feet, or nearly 25 metres, tall. Google is set to become the first to advertise on the billboard ... and according to the NY Times is paying $2.5 million U.S. dollars for a four-week period. We asked people in Times Square if advertisers are getting bang for their buck? SOUNDBITE: Samantha Salinas, visiting New York from San Antonio, Texas, saying (English): "We were just walking back to the hotel because we were freezing and we just were 'Ahh!' What is that? There's nothing like that in Texas." SOUNDBITE: Joselyn, visiting New York from San Antonio, Texas, saying (English): "I've never seen anything like this before. So it's amazing. It's really amazing." Judging by the reactions, even in Times Square, the ad space will definitely get noticed. The billboard's intersection is crossed daily by an average of 300,000 pedestrians and 115,000 motorists.
