Mithripala Sirisena is declared Sri Lanka's new president. Julie Noce reports.
Opposition candidate Mithripala Sirisena has been declared the new president elect of Sri Lanka. The soft spoken 63-year-old has vowed to root out corruption and bring constitutional reforms. We must allow all Sri Lankans to enjoy this victory, he said. I ask for everyone's support to take this process forward with compassion and love. Critics say incumbent candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa, who would have served his third term in office, had become increasing authoritarian and was marred by nepotism and corruption. Sirisena is expected to be sworn in later on Friday.
