Thousands are evacuated from the Chilean city of Valparaiso and neighbouring Vina del Mar as a forest fire rages out of control. Paul Chapman reports.
PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS MATERIAL THAT WAS ORIGINALLY 4:3 It began in a rubbish dump. By Friday night this forest fire had destroyed at least 260 hectares near the Chilean city of Valparaiso. About 4, 500 people have already been evacuated from their homes in Valparaiso and neighbouring Vina del Mar. As the fire rages out of control officials say up to 16, 000 people could be moved away to safety. Valparaiso is a city of mostly wooden houses although emergency services say none have yet been affected. March is a time when forest fires are common in Chile. A long dry summer has made them all the more savage this time around.
