The Empire Awards, which celebrates the best in popular films, awards 'Interstellar' with other winners including Andy Serkis and Ralph Fiennes. Rollo Ross reports.
Award season might seemed to have finished with the Oscars, but there was still one more to go. The Empire Awards sets itself apart from the others by not focusing on films with important messages, but instead on the movies which cinema-goers have enjoyed. SOUNDBITE Actor, Mark Strong, saying (English) "It's genuine fans voting for the films and the personalities so you know it's just a little less po-faced than some of the others." SOUNDBITE Actor, Simon Pegg, saying (English) "I feel that it's a less political ceremony, it's loads of fun, it's always a laugh and it's very laid back so I think it's what award ceremonies should be more like." And as far as the awards, Karen Gillan won Best Female Newcomer for her roles in both 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Oculus'. The Best Actor gong went to Andy Serkis for his performance captured role as the genetically enhanced chimpanze Caesar in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' and he couldn't be more proud. SOUNDBITE Best Actor winner, Andy Serkis, saying (English) "That's always been my desire, I suppose, to have an understanding that there is no difference between performance capture acting and live action acting. It is all just acting." Ralph Fiennes won the Empire Legend Award, although it was a hard pill to swallow. SOUNDBITE Empire Legend Award winner, Ralph Fiennes, saying (English) "Not a legend, but flattered to briefly have that label thrown my way but I'll bat it away again quickly." 'Game of Thrones' was named Empire Hero, breaking convention by being a TV show winning at a movie award ceremony. SOUNDBITE Empire Hero Award winner Liam Cunningham, saying (English) "Well, I know. The cheek of us being welcomed into the fold of film, which is a real honour, it's fantastic." 'Kingsman, the Secret Service' won Best British Film, while 'Interstellar' which was mostly snubbed during award season picked up both Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Film. SOUNDBITE 'Interstellar' director Christopher Nolan, saying (English): "Thank you very much and have a great rest of the evening."
