World renowned Bolshoi ballerina Maya Plisetskaya dies of a heart attack at the age of 89. Julie Noce reports.
Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya died of a heart attack in Germany on Saturday. Widely considered one of the great ballerinas of the 20th century, she began her training as a young girl at the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet. She was made a principal dancer when she joined the company in 1943. In 1960 she became the Bolshoi's prima ballerina. Russian politics at the time prohibited her from traveling with the Bolshoi when they toured western countries. She was finally permitted to dance outside Russia in 1959. She continued doing so well into her 60s and performed at a dance festival in Boston in 1988. Ms. Plisetskaya was 89 years old.
