U.S. Secretary John Kerry is greeted by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Saturday ahead of meetings likely to include discussion of territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
Kerry is on a two day visit for previously scheduled talks to prepare for the annual U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue next month in Washington.
Instead, Kerry's agenda will be heavily focused on Chinese land reclamations and rapidly growing Chinese-made artificial islands in the South China Sea that could be used to deploy radar and missile systems.
Kerry is expected to meet with President Xi Jinping and other senior officials.
Beijing claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims.
