EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS MATERIAL THAT WAS ORIGINALLY 4:3 Photos from TV Cubana show former President Fidel Castro meeting the Serbian president in Havana. Tomislav Nikolic's visit comes during a historic easing of hostility between Cuba, the EU and the United States. Fidel Castro took power in 1959 before handing the reins over to his younger brother Raul Castro in 2008. The older Castro was a supporter of Serbia in its opposition to Kosovo's independence. During his visit, Nikolic awarded Castro with the Order of the Republic of Serbia medal, for building ties between the two countries. Other recipients of this award include Russian President Vladimir Putin. Nikolic is the latest European leader to visit the Communist country to capitalise on the opening up of its economy.
