A 21-year-old white man has been arrested for the shooting deaths of nine people at Charleston's Emanuel AME church. The U.S. Justice Department is considering whether to charge Dylann Roof with a hate crime. Jillian Kitchener reports.
The search is over for 21-year-old Dylann Roof. ... suspected of killing nine people at the Mother Emanuel church in Charleston, Wednesday night. He was caught at a traffic stop in North Carolina. His car has now been impounded. Among those Roof allegedly killed was pastor Reverend Clemente Pinckney... a man President Barack Obama knew personally. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT OBAMA, SAYING: "There is something particularly heartbreaking about a death happening in a place in which we seek solace... Mother Emanuel is, in fact, more than a church. This is a place of worship that was founded by African Americans seeking liberty." U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch says her office is weighing hate crime charges against Roof. For the president, the killings are yet another example of why gun laws urgently need reform. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT OBAMA, SAYING: "...Once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hand on a gun." But in Charleston, the issue of gun reform is taking second place...to grief and mourning. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GOVERNOR OF SOUTH CAROLINA, NIKKI HALEY, SAYING: "And we've got some pain we have to go through." And there are questions still to be answered. Among those questions, say police, what would drive a young man to sit with churchgoers for about an hour before opening fire?
