New and old parliament members gathered for the last Union Parliament session under the current government. Katie Sargent reports.
Old and new members of Myanmar's parliament gathered Thursday for the last session of the Union Parliament under the current government. The National League for Democracy party of Aung San Suu Kyi is preparing to take office after winning about 80 percent of the elected seats in parliament in last year's general election. In a farewell address President Thein Sein said he wished for the new government to bring peace and development to the country. He promised to finish the task of the transition following proper procedures. The NLD-led government will take power in March following a presidential election carried out in the national parliament in February. Suu Kyi is constitutionally barred from becoming president because her two sons are not Myanmar citizens.
