The number of migrants and refugees arriving in Europe this year is yet again on a record-setting pace, according to the United Nations. Nathan Frandino reports.
The numbers are staggering... Already this year, 110,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in Greece and Italy. Last year, the number did not reach 100,000 until the end of June. And just like last year, there's still no solution for ending the crisis. Here on Greece's border with Macedonia, frustration grows as migrants wait to cross. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MIGRANT FROM AFGHANISTAN, SALIH, SAYING: "This is not good, this is against human values. We are here, asylum seekers, we apply for asylum, let us go, why do you stop us over here?" Countries like Austria, Slovenia and Macedonia are tightening border controls, leaving many refugees and migrants stranded. The U.N.'s refugee agency spokesperson Karin de Gruijl says those restriction have got to be lifted. (SOUNDBITE) (English) KARIN DE GRUIJL, SPOKESPERSON FOR UNHCR, SAYING: "They are really causing numerous hardships for the people arriving and we call on Europe to have a unified approach based on solidarity and international principles." Without that unified approach, the UN says every day is likely to bring even more migrants and refugees to the border... all trying to move towards a new life in Europe.
