Hundreds of demonstrators came to downtown Rio de Janeiro to protest the interim centre-right government led by Michel Temer.
Brazil's leftist President Dilma Rousseff was recently impeached.
The protesters say Rousseff was ousted in a coup and Temer's interim government is illegitimate.
SOUNDBITE: Amanda Magalhaes, student protester, saying (Portuguese):
"We are here to defend democracy and to fight against this government. We are taking over the streets and doing everything necessary until Temer is out.."
Many leftists, minorities and low-income Brazilians have banded together to say they fear a deep recession and the promised spending cuts the new government says are essential for an economic recovery.
