Amazon will create more than 100,000 full-time new jobs in the United States with full benefits over the next 18 months. Fred Katayama reports.
Amazon is hiring. The company is creating more than 100,000 new, full-time jobs in the United States in the next 18 months, it said in a statement. It's looking for workers with all skill and experience levels, for positions ranging from software development to warehouse work. With the new additions, Amazon's workforce will grow by more than fifty percent, to over 280,000. Anshel Sag, associate analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy explains the timing of the statement: (SOUNDBITE) ANSHEL SAG, ASSOCIATE ANALYST, MOOR INSIGHTS & STRATEGY, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "I think there is merit to this decision. However, I think the timing of this announcement is mostly political, and that they probably would have announced this later on down the road, regardless of who won the election. I just believe that there is slight political hinge to this timing that they would announce anyway, because they're going at a very rapid pace and they have a lot of very successful businesses." Amazon is the latest company to tout U.S. job creation - a hot-button political issue - since Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election in November. Trump's spokesman praised Amazon's announcement.
