Japan’s Toray Industries Inc has revealed 149 cases of quality data falsification at a materials-making subsidiary spanning eight years, in the latest quality-assurance scandal to hit a Japanese manufacturer. Laura Frykberg reports.
Another Japanese manufacturer Admitting to another case of cheating. This time, Toray Industries. the world's larger maker of carbon fibre. (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) PRESIDENT OF TORAY INDUSTRIES, AKIHIRO NIKKAKU, SAYING: "We sorted through all the past data and considered a strong preventive measure before informing our clients, so it took a while to come to today's report." It's confessed to 149 cases of falsifying quality-related data.. at its Toray Hybrid Cord unit - which supplies 13 clients with materials used for tires and other industrial goods... Toray has not named the clients affected, although it's ruled out Boeing. and Uniqlo's parent firm, which uses products in its heattech clothing. (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) PRESIDENT OF TORAY HYBRID CORD INC, NOBUHIRO SUZUKI, SAYING: "So far we haven't heard from our clients of any troubles in quality or complaint in safety issues regarding our products." Toray joins a long list of Japanese manufacturers Recently hit by scandals, from cheating to compliance. They include Kobe Steel, Mitsubishi Materials, and auto makers Nissan and Subaru. But it's not just a Japanese problem. SOUNDBITE (English) CITY INDEX MARKET ANALYST, KEN ODELUGA, SAYING: "I there's been a steady stream of similar incidents from United States manufacturers and of course we in Europe have seen a few notes notably with both Volkswagen.." Toray only admitted to the cheating After an anonymous online post. It said it didn't reveal it earlier - because there's no threat to the safety of the materials sold. Toray's Investors though weren't convinced Shares in the firm plunged more than 8 percent after the announcement.
